What Motivates you to be a Governor at Honley High School?

I am a former student as are both my children and we have all done well partly as a result of the great school we attended so I wanted to give something back.

In addition, from my personal and professional experiences, I know the powerful impact education has on future lives. I see my role as a governor to support and challenge Honley High school to be the best school in can be for all our students.

What is your professional background and where do you work?

All my working life has involved working with children from birth to teens and their families. I started off as a Careers Advice and Guidance worker but changed career paths to Early Years when my children were young and I jointly established and ran an Out of School childcare club. In more recent years I worked as a Sure Start Locality Manager and I had the privilege of working with communities in Batley and Huddersfield, as we built and delivered Sure Start Children’s Centre Services.

For the last 2 years I have been employed as a director, trainer and consultant for an education and training company.

What interests / hobbies do you have?

My family comes first so spending as much time with them as their busy lives will allow me to is a priority!

I enjoy running, cycling and generally keeping fit. I look forward to our holidays and love travelling around our fantastic island but also much further afield, time and money permitting!

What type of Governor are you and what specific responsibilities do you have on the Governing Body?

I am a Parent Governor.  My daughter attends the school and my son left Honley High in 2010. Liam is now at University in Manchester. During all my son’s years at the school I was a single parent working full time as a Mortgage Broker, however now that my work-life situation has changed I have more time available to commit to the school.

What motivates you to be a Governor at Honley High School?

My objectives as a parent governor are to facilitate in pursuing improved sports facilities for the school along with ensuring the school is financially efficient.

In my opinion school isn’t just about getting the best exam results- it should encompass so much more. Yes we should celebrate and encourage the high achievers but, social skills, team sports, awareness of their local community, cultural experiences and seeing everything as an opportunity are all just as important. We have a responsibility to nurture our children into confident and independent adults- which is all the more prevalent in today’s competitive work place.

What interests/hobbies do you have?

My daughter plays hockey and netball so I take an active role supporting these interests through voluntary work at Huddersfield Dragons Hockey Club. We currently live at Beaumont Park and I am an active member of the Friends of Beaumont Park- organising events and weddings on the bandstand. I’m also forging links between Beaumont Park and the school with various projects. Being a member of Friends of Honley High School is another way I can get involved with the school.

I know Honley High is a great school and I wanted the opportunity to play a part in ensuring it stays that way by being part of the Governing Body.
