Reporting Absence

If your child is absent from school, please telephone 01484 506484 and follow the prompts for student absence. Please state clearly your child's name, form and reason for absence or you may notify us for free via the school app on the Absence Hotline.  Please note you require your own wifi to be able to send in app messages. As part of our safeguarding procedures, the school operates an automated first day call up system. This means that if we are not notified that your child will be absent from school, you will be contacted by telephone or text until we have confirmation of the absence. In addition, your child's school planner has absence slips which you can complete and send in with your child when he/she returns to school.

Attendance

At Honley High School we take good attendance very seriously, as there is a direct link between how often students come to school and their achievement levels. Every day your child is absent can damage their education and future success.

Students’ attendance is recorded electronically at the beginning of every lesson. Attendance rates which fall below 90% (19 missed days) over the school year give serious cause for concern. Research suggests that attendance below 90% seriously affects your child's achievement, progression and life chances. We are working hard to improve attendance across the school, with a particular focus on any students whose attendance falls below 90%.

Your support is absolutely vital.

You can help us and your child by doing the following:

  • If your child cannot attend school due to illness, you should contact school as soon as possible on the first day and every day that your child is absent from school. The only exception to this is when you have already informed school that your child is definitely going to be absent from school for a period of time
  • Take holidays only during the school holiday periods. No other holiday will be authorised by the school unless there are exceptional circumstances.  A copy of our policy in this regard is available from our website
  • Make medical/dental appointments outside school time, where possible
  • Discuss any problems concerning attendance with your child’s Form Tutor, Head of Year - Pastoral or Head of Year - Academic

As part of our safeguarding procedures, we operate an automated first day call system. This means that if your child is absent from school and we have not been notified, you will automatically be contacted by text or voicemail until we have confirmation of the absence.

Students arriving late

Students arriving late must report to Student Services to sign in. We will contact parents/carers if this happens on a regular basis.

Students leaving school early

If your child needs to leave early, for example for a medical or dental appointment, you should contact school by telephone, app, e-mail, letter or a note in your child’s school planner.  Students must not leave school for any reason, without first reporting to the Student Services Office.  Students should not arrange to leave school with parents/carers via mobile phones, without first consulting Miss Schofield (the school’s Student Welfare Officer) and the Students Services Office.

Eid al-Fitr

Students celebrating Eid will be granted up to two days authorised absence.  Please follow the school's absence procedure and contact school if your child will be absent due to Eid.
