PHONICS PROGRAMME

Phonics are the building blocks of students’ literacy, including the skills of hearing, identifying and using the patterns of sounds or phonemes to read written language. The programme aims to quickly close the gap between students and their peers by providing a simple, but powerful solution to accelerate reading progress. This is achieved through regular sessions during form time, where students build confidence in reading, writing, listening and comprehension skills.

You can access the parent section of the Ruth Miskin website, which includes phonics resources you can use to support your child.

We are proud to offer this programme and are pleased with the progress students make; more information about the positive impact phonics programmes can have can be found here.

If your child is selected to take part in our phonics programme, you will be contacted by Mr Wells, our Phonics Lead, but you may also wish to look at the Fresh Start FAQs.

Here at Honley High School, we have partnered with Ruth Miskin to provide their ‘Fresh Start’ synthetic phonics-based literacy support programme. The Fresh Start programme is aimed at supporting students who are slightly below their expected reading age and is taught in small groups or individually.
