OUR LITERACY STRATEGY

At Honley High School, literacy is one of the golden threads that run between subjects and our curriculum offer.

In addition to unlocking the curriculum, our literacy strategy seeks to readdress the social and economic disadvantages that some of our students face, and to also promote an ethos of reading outside the curriculum.

Our Active Learning Cycle allows staff to communicate ideas to students using high quality academic language. Through this, we develop core reading, writing and speaking skills within each subject to a high level of accuracy and precision.

We offer the following programmes to support our in-lesson literacy work:

  • iGen Reading - for all students in all year groups

  • Fresh Start Phonics intervention

  • Coram Beanstalk Reading Leaders

  • Fixed and rolling literacy interventions

Running parallel to our academic literacy, we promote Reading for Pleasure through a varied and exciting range of activities including, but not exclusive to: Author visits, Reading and Writing Challenges, Book Clubs and themed events throughout the year.
