Work Experience

Work Experience provides an excellent opportunity to shape your perception of the world of work and inspire your future pathways.

We are delighted to offer all our Year 10 students the fantastic opportunity to participate in a week of Work Experience from Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May 2024.

Work experience provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain insight into the working world, develop important skills and boost confidence. Whilst we understand that students will obviously wish to work in an area that interests them, it is not always important that the placement exactly mirrors their career aspirations. Employers often refer to the transferable skills that young people need to develop; therefore, it is often more valuable to consider the type of working environment and the skills they wish to develop such as communication skills, ability to work in a team, motivation and increasing their confidence etc.

North Yorkshire Business and Education in Partnership (NYBEP a Business and Education Partnership covering Yorkshire, Humber and the North East) helps us in our organisation, including the completion of placements regarding risk assessments, admin and health and safety visits.

Students need to complete the following steps:

Step 1

Check school email to access the Work Experience Connect platform either through the app or online portal

Step 2

Enter personal details on the app, including any medical conditions/relevant health information. This forms part of the consent process which the employer will agree to, so it is essential this section is completed.  This needs to be completed by Thursday 23 November 2023

Step 3

Complete the essential pre-placement resources, like Skills Builder via the app/portal and check out the videos with tips and ideas

Step 4

Find a placement. Think about the type of role you would like to do but remember, it doesn’t have to be your dream job. Once you have identified the type of role you are interested in, search in the local area and phone the organisation directly.

Access resources and support materials through the app - check out the videos with tips and ideas

Step 5

Once you’ve found a placement and this has been agreed with the employer, enter their details and the role onto the app/portal.

The deadline to find a placement and complete the app/portal is Monday 8 January 2024.

Things to consider:

  • Complete the essential pre-placement resources, like Skills Builder, via the app, to prepare for your placement. This also helps to inform the employer of the areas you would like to focus on during your placement

  • Work Experience is for one placement over five days, Monday to Friday, with a maximum of 40 hours between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm

  • Meet your employer in person before your Work Experience starts. We recommend that you are accompanied by a parent/carer (responsible adult)

  • Contact your employer closer to your Work Experience start date to confirm that everything is still in place

  • Complete your Work Experience Journal via the app/online.  We’d recommend starting this a few weeks before your placement starts and complete it each day of your placement. Don’t leave it to the last minute to fill it all in at the end of your placement

  • If you are unwell and unable to attend your placement, your employer and school must be contacted each day of absence

  • A member of the school staff will contact your employer during your placement to check how you are getting on

  • The employer will confirm your attendance, and at the end of the placement they will be given the opportunity to provide feedback about your placement

Any questions?

If any student requires support or guidance with their Work Experience application, our Careers Adviser, Amy Hesselgrove is available in the Library during breaktime and lunch (Monday to Wednesday), and Mrs Moylan (Head of Year 10) and Miss Cumming (Communications Manager) are also able to help with any queries.
