ONLINE LEARNING & REVISION

Independent study is a vital skill and ensures students have a full understanding of their subjects.

Our lessons are saved to Microsoft Teams so students can access them for revision or to catch up on a missed lesson.

In addition, any student who is unable to attend school, and is well enough, should use the following information to access their lessons from home.

Home Learning Overview

  1. Lesson resources will be uploaded to Teams ‘Class Materials’ folders by your child’s usual teachers, as per their normal school timetable

  2. Students should expect to work for the whole of the timetabled lesson

  3. Students should have note paper or their exercise book plus the usual stationery for a lesson to hand (pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, geometry set)

How to Access Home Learning

  1. Students have their own Office 365 account which gives them free access to a number of apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams. Students should log in to Office 365 here www.office.com with their school email address* and the password they would usually use at school

  2. To access work, go to the Teams app. Here students will find their classes which they should click into for work set by their usual teacher

  3. It is important students watch the video here to see how to access their lesson resources and assignments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx8xHpRMFHU

  4. Students need to remember to access lessons for the correct day according to their normal timetable

  5. Students can contact their subject teachers by posting a message on the Teams ‘Channel’ (this Channel is visible to all members of their class team)

  6. Students must check their emails and Teams Channels daily

*Student emails are: username@honley.tlt.school

Students can also access their Outlook emails through Office 365 and use this to contact their Form Teacher, Head of Year or Subject Teachers. It is important students only contact staff using their school email address.

Safe and appropriate use of Teams

At all times, students must adhere to the school’s ICT Acceptable Usage Policy.

Forgotten Password

To reset a student password, a parent/carer will need to email itsupport@tlt.school, include ‘Honley Password Reset’ in the subject, and in the email their child’s full name, form group, date of birth and username. Our ICT team will respond to password requests Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 3.00pm.

KS4 Revision Guides

A good revision guide can be an invaluable resource; therefore, we have purchased the appropriate GCSE Revision Guides/ Workbooks at a reduced cost to support families and students.

Revision Guides are available to buy online through ParentPay. If you have difficulties accessing ParentPay, please contact Mrs Rolling, Finance Officer, by email at finance@honley.tlt.school or by telephone at 01484 506484.

Students eligible for free school meals receive the revision guides at no cost. If you feel your child is eligible but hasn’t received their revision guides, please contact Mrs Roby, Assistant Headteacher, and she will follow up on this for you.

We would highly recommend these books to support students’ progress. Revision at home is vital to students retaining knowledge learnt in school, being better prepared, and less stressed when they sit their exams.

Year 11 Support

We are committed to doing everything possible to support our Year 11 students throughout their final year, including during mocks and final exams. We offer after school booster sessions in most subjects and run additional support sessions during school holidays. Further information will be shared closer to the time.

Our support increases throughout the year. In January, we will restart our after-school Friday Revision Café, giving students a chance to enjoy a bite to eat while revising with their teachers available to answer any questions.

Student wellbeing is a top priority, and we recognise that Year 11 can be a challenging time for some. Our Pastoral Team is always on hand to provide support.

We are delighted by the high uptake of these sessions by our Year 11 students. We know that participating in these boosters boosts confidence and enhances exam preparation, helping students feel well-prepared for their assessments.

Key Stage 3 Revision Overview

It’s never too early to embed your learning and understanding with additional revision.

Below are a few pointers to get you started.

Following the success of Reading Routes with Year 7 last year, we are excited to introduce this initiative to all KS3 students.  Reading Routes encourages students to explore different books and genres throughout the year, helping to enhance their reading skills and foster a love for reading.

Every fortnight (Monday, A week), students bring their book and take part in a Reading Routes lesson, where teachers read and discuss books together.  Parental support in ensuring students bring their books each fortnight is greatly appreciated.

DAILY READING

At Honley, we believe in encouraging and nurturing a love of reading, so all students are encouraged to read for pleasure and to read a book for around 20 minutes per day. There are numerous benefits, including improved literacy, critical thinking, creativity, empathy, wellbeing and overall academic success.

Did you know that children who read books often at age 10 and more than once a week at age 16 gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly? Reading really is a powerful thing!

There are plenty of books to choose from via our school’s e-library https://honleyhigh.eplatform.co/ or the eplatform app. We are sure students will find something to pique their interest.

There is also a wide range of FREE eBooks and eAudiobooks online from our local library here: https://www.borrowbox.com/

Additionally, FREE eAudiobooks can be discovered online here: https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Should a student experience any issues with the tasks set via Teams, or wish to complete some additional work, they may also like to access the Oak National Academy, which is the government’s approved remote learning site: https://www.thenational.academy/.

Or, the well-established BBC Bitesize website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize.  Many of our teachers will also have shared subject-specific websites with their classes to supplement learning.
